Tejanos and Tejanas need to support
and promote fellow Tejano musicians and their unique Tejano music

TEXAS SPANISH TEJANO MUSIC
You will be pleased
and pleasantly surprised to learn TEJANO music is just as good as Rock
and roll, Country, Blues or Cajun. The music style is custom made for
bilingual Spanish speaking Unitedstatesians with a diversity of music
preferences. The beauty is most of us, who are bilingual can enjoy our
favorite songs both in English and Spanish. The music style is uniquely
Tejano (Texan) while the lyrics are predominately Spanish not Mexican.
Those who are not
familiar with the distinction between Tejano and Mexican music, allow me to explain
the distinction between the two styles. Tejano music has its own flavor
and it is unique to those of us, who are truly Texans. What sets our
music aside is our accordion styles, base, twelve string guitar (Bajo
Sexto), horns, piano, drums synthesizers and the vocals of our truly
unique Tejano artists. In my humble opinion Tejano music is blessed
with the following varieties of music styles. Let me proudly begin with
the original and very humble style identified as Conjunto. The group
consists of base, twelve string guitar (bajo), drums and accordion with
a lead vocalist. The orchestral style introduced and incorporated the
brass section that stirred additional excitement to the entire Tejano
music scene. The continuous evolution of our music style has come a
long way. It’s mainly happy toe tapping, dancing music.
Efforts to promote the
music style with English lyrics have been minimal. However, once in a
while a song comes along and becomes very popular. I’d like to point
out an observation concerning these popular songs. In the majority of
the cases these popular songs lean heavily toward a Latino or Mexican
flare. IE La Bamba and current Ricky Martin’s Mi Vida Loca.
On the other hand
Tejano artists, who work hard and produce exceptional bilingual Spanish
and English material receive very little airplay. How can we expect our
talented musicians to continue producing the English music we enjoy,
when the industry fails to promote it? Texas Spanish radio stations,
heavily favor the Mexican music style. Clearly the support leans
towards Latino or Mexican artist. The music trend in most Spanish
Tejano radio stations, heavily favors the Mexican style and not the
true Tejano flare. Promoters are aggressively perusing foreign markets,
inundating our Tejanos airwaves with Mexican music! They impose on
Tejano artists to conform to foreign Spanish markets. Tejano music
promoters fail to realize great numbers of Tejanos are not interested
in that kind of music. Unfortunately Tejano music fans fails to
recognize, the music being aired is not Tejano music. This is how the
foreign Spanish music industry reaps the financial benefits,
opportunities and popularity of our Tejano artists. Tejano music fans
blindly support foreign entertainment interests, that do not identify
with or represent our Tejano music style, preference or culture.
Promotional efforts of
Tejano music are extremely limited. Tejanos and Tejanas need to support
and promote fellow Tejano musicians and their unique Tejano music
style. Tejano music entertainers, executives, promoters and radio
station personalities need to identify with the fans by acknowledging
them as Tejanos and Tejanas at concerts, promotional events and on live
air broadcasts. “For all our devoted Tejanos and Tejanas, who support
Tejano Music”
